HOW TO MAKE YARN BUTTONS THAT MATCH YOUR KNIT PERFECTLY.

This is a video tutorial on how to make your own handmade scallop yarn buttons.
These complete the finished look on your knitwear.
You will need
  • A cardboard circle numbered 1-12
  • A tapestry needle
  • An old button
  • And yarn

1

Cut out a circle of cardboard with twice the diameter of the button you are covering (if your button is 1 in then your circle should be 2in), divide it with 12 notches, numbered 1 to 12, like at clock face.

Follow the video tutorial on how to make the button.

The sequence as to lay out the 12 front spokes and back loops are as follows:

 12
12  6
 7
 1
 2
 8
 9
 3
 4
 10
10  11
11  5
 6
 12
12  11
11  5
 4
 10
10  9

3

You have now created 12 front spokes, and 12 back loops.

4

Secure the yarn round the middle of the spokes and make sure that the needle ends up between 12 and 1.

5

Now start weaving around the spokes, going under 1 and 12, then 12 and 11 ➝ 11 and 10 etc. Keep on doing this until the size of your weave is almost to the edge of the cardboard circle and will be able to cover the sides of the button.

6

Lift of the back loops and place the button on the back of the weave and sew it in place through the loops, tighten up and secure the thread. and you are ready to make the rest of the buttons for your project.
